The Heart

“Write from the heart.”

The Heart Nebula

Okay. Right. I think I can do that. Before I begin, though, I just have one question…
     What exactly does that mean?

“From the heart”. It’s a phrase we hear all the time. But what do we mean when we say it?
     What exactly is the heart?
The heart is the organ in your body that pumps nutrients and oxygen through your blood, which gives your body energy to do things. Or something like that. Science was never my best subject. But, despite my terrible memory and lack of sciencey vocabulary, I know that the heart is very important. Just google it: what does the heart do? Read for a little bit and you’ll see that it does a lot. It keeps us alive and breathing, involuntarily. It’s incredible.
And it’s really not surprising that the metaphorical heart is connected to our feelings. It’s our passions, our love, our pain. It’s the ache in your chest when your world is crumbling, the butterflies when you talk to your crush, the feeling you get when your favorite song comes on the radio. The literal heart keeps us alive; the metaphorical heart keeps us living.
What is the heart? Well, the heart, over all, is a gift.
So what does it mean to write from the heart? What does it mean to do anything from the heart? To sing, to give, to love?
I think it means to give back to the One who gave you your heart in the first place.
I think it means to worship.

“The literal heart keeps us alive; the metaphorical heart keeps us living.”
    That line is genius.
