Chapter 36

Katheryn woke up as some guards walked into her cell. She blinked a couple of times and then slowly stood to her feet. She rubbed her eyes, hoping she was imagining it. But no, the guards grabbed her and rechained her hands and feet. She fought them, but it was pointless. There were two of them.

They took her out of the cell and began marching her down the hall. She wondered what they were going to do to her.

They walked out of the prison area and up a stair case. Surprisingly, this escort wasn’t as terrible as the last one. The soldiers were focusing on getting her to wherever it was she was going, instead of making her trip there as painful as possible. She almost enjoyed the trip. It was better than being locked up in a dirty old cell. But after a few twists and turns, they made it to their destination.

The guards took her into the throne room. Katheryn hung back, but they forced her forward. They drug her to a pillar near the throne. They began to chain her to the pillar. She fought and protested against it, but they didn’t seem to hear her.

The two guards were done soon enough, and they left without a word. Katheryn stood as far away from the pillar as her chains would allow, which was only one or two paces. She watched the guards leave, and stared after them for a long while after they had disappeared. She then turned to her chains.

She began to tug at them, but they were chained tight. The clinking sound they made bounced off the walls, making the silent room more eerie than it was. She began to pull at the knot. She pulled and tugged, but it was super tight. But she didn’t give up. She pulled at the knot as hard as she could.

“No good,” a voice came from behind her, making her skin crawl. She whirled around and saw King Victor sitting on the throne. A shiver went up her back. He had not been there a few moments before.

He stood and slowly began walking toward her, a creepy smile on his face.

“What do you want, Victor?” she hissed, putting her back against the pillar. He kept walking until he was only a few feet away. He stared at her with his piercing, black eyes.

She heard the sound of steel on steel, and suddenly his sword was pointed at her throat. She took a deep breath and stared at the point of the sword which was only a few inches away from her neck.

“Katheryn,” he said quietly, tenderly. Katheryn did not respond.

“Do you really believe that you are the Chosen One?” he said in a whisper. He spoke the words that Katheryn had dared not even to think. She tried not to let her mind wander that far, but the soundless room made it hard to think of anything else.

“Look at you, Katheryn! You’re what, sixteen? So you are a sixteen year old girl! Do you really believe that you could defeat my army all by yourself?” he continued his questioning. Each word seemed to pound into Katheryn’s skull. Her thoughts were in a whirl. She couldn’t make what was truth, and what was a lie.

“Well, do you?” he asked quietly, almost gently.  Each question disappeared, and she was left with the one.

“Am I the Chosen One?” she thought, “He is right, I am only a young girl. How could I be the legendary hero that everybody has been waiting for?”

She opened her mouth to say no, when suddenly her past came back to her like a hurricane. She remembered her hardship through the test. But even though every part of the test was deadly and hard and was made so no one would survive, she had. No one else had been able to do that, but yet, she had. How could she not be the Chosen One?

Fire burning in her eyes, she glared at the King.

“Yes,” she exclaimed, her voice reverberating off the walls, “I do!”

They were both silent. But then, King Victor began to laugh.

“Then you will die! I was going to offer you your freedom, but since you believe so strongly that you are the Chosen One, I shall take your word for it and not take any chances. You will die!”  he exclaimed. Katheryn just stared at him.

He leaned into her face. The point of the sword began to cut into her throat. She froze so that it wouldn’t cut any deeper.

“Poor, poor Katheryn,” he mocked, “You shall die. All alone. Deserted by all your friends. Isn’t that a sad fate?”

The word ‘deserted’ vibrated off the walls over and over again. Her heart thumped harder. What did he mean? King Victor laughed slightly.

“Yes, I know of your friend,” he laughed, “Cameron, wasn’t it? He left you. I saw his footprints and the guards at the gate said they saw him leave.”

Katheryn’s heart beat all the faster. It couldn’t be true, could it? Cameron wouldn’t ditched her. Would he? But it all made sense. What else could have happened to him?

Katheryn mentally pushed the thought away. She wouldn’t believe it. She couldn’t believe it.

“You are lying!” she hissed, pushing him away from her. The sword stopped pressing into her neck.

“Am I, really?” he laughed, “Well then, what happened to him?”

Katheryn didn’t reply. She looked away.

“No matter,” the King said, pushing his sword into her throat again, “You shall die alone.”

The word ‘alone’ pounded into her skull.

“Sad end for the Chosen One, don’t you think?” he said as he pulled back the sword, “Dying all alone.”

She glared at him as he pulled his sword all the way back. And just before he plunged it toward her, she exclaimed, “I am not afraid to die alone!”

Everything was silent. The King hesitated. Finally, he smiled at her, and lowered his sword.

“Guards!” he called, not looking away from her. She stared back at him. He leaned into her face again.

“You amuse me, Chosen One,” he whispered as four guards walked into the room, “So you shall live another day.”

“Guards,” he ordered, walking toward his throne, “Take her away.”

The guards unchained her from the pillar, and took her out of the throne room. Katheryn looked back at the King as they walked out of the room. He was smiling at her. She shuddered as the door shut behind her.
